The National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading research-intensive university (http://nus.edu.sg/) that is consistently ranked among the world’s top universities. Established in 2004, the Department of Communications and New Media (http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/cnm/) is a leader in communication and new media research and education. It offers undergraduate, honours and PhD programmes in communications and new media studies, with an innovative curriculum that introduces students to key debates in the areas of media studies, communication management, interactive media design and cultural studies. Its curriculum provides students with practical skills in social media management, user interface design, and digital marketing. Its students undertake industry immersion through its compulsory internship programme. The Department also offers an undergraduate double degree with the School of Business; undergraduate minors in Interactive Media Design and Cultural Studies, and the Cultural Studies in Asia PhD programme. It has research concentrations in media psychology, health communication and cultural studies. Successful candidates for these positions will join an engaging community of 32 full-time faculty, 12 part-time instructors, and 760 undergraduate and graduate students.

The Department of Communications and New Media at National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applicants for the following positions to begin full-time in August 2019.

1. Assistant Professor in Cultural Studies (Tenure Track)

Candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: network theory; digital ethnography; data cultures; gender and sexuality media studies; cultural studies in Asia; cultural policy and creative industries. Candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in cultural studies and critical theory, and a demonstrated engagement in the cultural, political and ethical implications of race, gender, sexuality, social class and social practice.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in Cultural Studies, Media and Communications Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of successful teaching.

Professional Development: Successful talented early career candidates with excellent research track records will be considered for the National University of Singapore Presidential Young Professorship (NUS PYP) scheme which includes a start-up research grant up to SGD 750,000 including scholarships to hire PhD students, and an award of SGD 250,000 for discretionary spending.

2. Assistant Professor in Computational Communication (Tenure Track)

Candidates will have expertise in one of more of the following areas: computational social science; data science; social algorithms and artificial intelligence; web science research methods.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in Media and Communications Studies, Computational Communication, Design Informatics, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.

3. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Digital Humanities (Open Rank, Educator Track)

Candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: interactive digital art and immersive media; machine learning and text analytics; creative pedagogy and computational art; computation and curation; human interface/user experience (UX) design; cultural informatics; media historiography, archive, and digital humanities; practice-based research to media data analysis and visualization. Candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of computational methods in the humanistic enquiry and demonstrated engagement in industry practice.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in Media and Communications Studies, Computational Communications, Creative Media, Digital Information Management; Design Informatics, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.

4. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Communication Management (Open Rank, Educator Track)

Candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: health communications; mixed methods; digital strategic communications; media writing; social media marketing; media communication and public relations. Candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of industry trends and engagement in industry practice.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in Media and Communications, Strategic Communications, Public Relations, Digital Media Studies, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of successful teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with professional experience in digital strategic communications, audience cultivation and engagement via social media, public relations, crisis communications, or user experience design both in industry and academia, and/or accreditation in public relations or similar distinction.

5. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Digital Journalism (Open Rank, Educator Track)

Candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: media writing; online journalism; digital news production; sports/science/financial/health/fashion journalism. Candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of industry trends and engagement in industry practice, including a range of experience working in print/tv/radio news production.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in Journalism, Media and Communications, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; ability to make a distinct contribution to digital journalism and news production in a changing new media environment; evidence of successful teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with professional experience in digital journalism, and/or accreditation in journalism or similar distinction.  

6. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Design Informatics (Open Rank, Educator Track)

Candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: social data science, visualization, and communication; design thinking; internet of things and physical computing; interface design, machine learning. Candidates will have a demonstrated track record in bringing together design and computing to connect technology with society, health, fashion, finance, or arts/culture, and an established programming of hacking, making and materialising through dynamic web design, digital, and physical media for innovation-driven entrepreneurship.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD in Media and Communication Studies, Computational Communication, Design Informatics, Computer Science, Information Science, or closely-related discipline by the date of appointment, and evidence of successful teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.


For tenure-track applications, post-doctoral experience and a proven or strongly emerging track record of high quality research and impactful publications, alongside clear research plans, are highly desirable. For educator-track applications, teaching and/or supervision experience, and evidence of excellence in teaching are highly desirable.

Remuneration is competitive and includes medical, housing, relocation and other benefits. Significant research start-up funding is available if appointed on the tenure track.

  5. Teaching evaluations and peer review reports, if available. Other evidence of teaching excellence and/or other contributions to education e.g. curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, etc. should be provided.
  6. A research statement (max. 3 pages) highlighting major accomplishments and short- and longer-term research plans, citing up to five significant publications, creative works or other scholarly contributions, and explaining their significance. Sample copies of these contributions should be provided.
  7. A complete list of publications, grouped according to papers, books, and reviews, including page numbers, in bibliographic form.
  8. Please indicate total number of publications to date, citation analysis (excluding self-citations and in the case of co-authored work, cross-citations), and impact analysis of research output, highlighting papers with the highest citation counts, and creative works with high impact.
  9. A list of public and professional service and elaborate on the impact of service to the international academic community, profession/industry, and national/international agencies.
  10. A list of University service and elaborate on the impact of service to the Department, Faculty and/or University, particularly where there was impactful leadership.
  11. [For senior appointments (i.e. Associate Professor and above)] A list of external reviewers recommended (names, contact details, applicant’s relationship to them). These external reviewers should preferably not be close collaborators or the applicant’s PhD/post-doc supervisor.
