Pitzer College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Indigenous Cultural Resurgence in the interdisciplinary department of Critical Global Studies beginning Fall, 2022. Indigenous land-based knowledge systems and revitalization movements respond to the catastrophic consequences of colonization, imperialism, and global capitalism. The successful candidate will be able to carry out research, community engagement, and teaching in contemporary local and global self-determination movements of Indigenous communities, such as Native Nations on the land of and in proximity to the Claremont Colleges or other Indigenous Nations globally.

The successful candidate will become a member of Critical Global Studies at Pitzer, an interdisciplinary field group, and will collaborate with colleagues in other field groups that cross- list courses with CGS. The successful candidate will teach five courses annually, including courses in Indigenous Studies, a community-based social justice practicum, and an interdisciplinary methods course. Strong preference will be given for candidates who have completed a Ph.D., J.D., M.F.A., or other relevant terminal degree by the time of appointment in an interdisciplinary field, such as Native American/American Indian or Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, Justice Studies, Cultural Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Media Studies, Political Economy, Geography, Social Movements or Rural Studies, Postcolonial or Decolonial Studies, Environmental Studies, Comparative Literature, History of Consciousness, Feminist Studies, Queer and Two-Spirit Studies, Critical Legal Studies, Public Health, or Urban Studies. Candidates with experience working in local Indigenous communities and interdisciplinary settings are also preferred.

Critical Global Studies has a strong commitment to social justice that addresses power inequalities. The successful candidate will have evidence of promise in place-based relation- building and interdisciplinary scholarship, a strong track record of Indigenous community engagement, and demonstrated success in undergraduate teaching. Reference letters from persons familiar with the research and teaching experience of the candidate are required, as well as at least one reference letter from a person familiar with the candidate’s participation in Indigenous community efforts at cultural resurgence and self-determination.

Pitzer College has a strong institutional commitment to diversity in all areas and strongly encourages candidates from underrepresented groups. We favor candidates who can contribute to the College’s distinctive educational objectives, which promote interdisciplinary perspectives, intercultural understanding, and concern with social responsibility and the ethical implications of knowledge and action. Pitzer College is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. For the successful applicant with the relevant interests, affiliations are possible with the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chican@/Latin@ Studies, and/or the Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research, and Engagement.

To apply, submit letter of application, curriculum vitae, selected evidence of excellence in teaching and research, statement of teaching philosophy, description of research, and three letters of recommendation. Additionally, candidates should include a separate statement that addresses how their cultural, experiential, and/or academic background contribute to the understanding of diversity at the College level. The deadline for applying is (10/15/2021) or until the position is filled.
