Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in music or equivalent professional credentials. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an artistic and scholarly agenda compatible with the goals of a major research university while demonstrating the requisite artistic vision and administrative skills to guide the Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra and occasionally to lead additional instrumental ensembles. The successful candidate is expected to exhibit the potential for a distinguished career as a performing artist, pedagogue, and scholar at the national and international level as manifested by performances, recordings, and research activity. In addition to possessing outstanding qualifications as an orchestral conductor, the successful candidate should be committed to fostering performance in a liberal arts environment and to university-wide engagement in orchestral music.

The successful candidate will play an active role in the musical and intellectual life of the Department by working closely and collaboratively with colleagues. Main duties will include directing the Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra; advising students; and engaging in service to the Department, College, and University. Other opportunities might include teaching conducting and coaching chamber music. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who can expand the corpus of large-ensemble music to which Cornell students are exposed while framing it in historical and cultural contexts.

Desirable attributes include (but are not limited to) a record of innovative programming and commissioning, positive classroom teaching experience, excellent student management, and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary liberal arts community. Since the large instrumental ensembles provide a “lab” for students of composition as well as performance, the successful candidate will provide graduate and advanced undergraduate students with essential resources in topics such as conducting, musicianship, composing music for large forces, and instrumentation and arrangement.
