Located in the heart of Orange County, California, the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering (FSE) at Chapman University is growing rapidly and seeking highly motivated colleagues who would like to help build Chapman’s newest school and fill the Swenson Family Hall of Engineering set to open in Fall 2021.

Opened in the Fall of 2019, FSE offers undergraduate degree programs in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics, and Software Engineering. An undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering is expected to begin in Fall 2021. Position Summary:

FSE invites applications for a Makerspace Manager position. The position is expected to begin this spring/early summer and will play an integral role in assisting and coordinating the move into the new Swenson Family Hall of Engineering.

Under general direction of the Dean, the Makerspace Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations and activities in FSE and Grand Challenges Initiative Program (GCI) makerspaces and facilities. This includes development and oversight of training materials, safety standards, and operating protocols. Develop innovative and modern solutions to the management, training, and support of students, curricula, research, personnel, and equipment. Participate in the development, planning, and execution of educational prototyping facilities including equipment selection and facility layout. Support students and faculty in course-related projects, engineering-specific extracurricular activities, and academic research related to the manufacturing/making facilities and programs. Serve as FSE’s primary liaison to various campus departments to ensure the physical and environmental conditions of facilities and equipment are safe, efficient, and properly maintained.

Duties and Responsibilities assigned to the Position:

Oversee the day-to-day operations and activities in the Fowler School of Engineering (FSE) and Grand Challenges Initiative (GCI) makerspaces and facilities. 

Key role is to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facilities on a daily basis.

Support students and faculty in course-related projects, engineering-specific extracurricular activities, and academic research related to the manufacturing/making facilities and programs. 

Develop innovative and modern solutions to the management, training and support of students, curricula, research, personnel, and equipment. 

In conjunction with faculty, staff, and students, develop training materials, safety standards, policies, and procedures for the makerspaces and FSE facilities. 

Schedule, coordinate, and facilitate training sessions on equipment, technology, and safety.

Coordinate and assist in the development, planning, and execution of educational prototyping facilities; including equipment selection, facility layout, safety standards, waste management protocols, and the integration of those facilities into the School’s research and education agendas.

Serve as FSE’s primary liaison to Facilities Management, IS&T, Campus Planning, Risk Management, Public Safety, and other university departments to ensure the facilities are safe, well equipped, and properly maintained.

Serve as FSE’s main point of contact for equipment vendors and their representatives regarding sales, demonstrations, installation, service visits, and inventory.

Assist faculty in troubleshooting and performing basic maintenance of equipment as needed. Coordinate maintenance needs, submit/track work orders to ensure completion, and conduct routine/preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted services of equipment and facilities.

Oversee and coordinate facility use and activities for non-Chapman users (industry partners, training, external academic partnerships, collaborative research, outreach, etc.) 

Hire, train, schedule, and supervise makerspace staff and student employees.

Monitor lab and makerspace budgets and expenditures. Assist in development of the equipment, supply and capital budgets. 

Support basic administrative functions including creating and following up on purchase requisitions, preparing sole source forms and routing for approvals, ensuring receipt of items, and working closely with vendors to ensure information accuracy on invoices.

Organize and manage records and documentation on equipment, instruments and supplies necessary for labs, makerspace and facilities. 

Attend meetings, including facilities coordination and risk management meetings, as required and report back to the Dean/Leadership Cabinet.

Coordinates with the Dean, staff and various university departments on space use and allocation, special events, storage, and facilities access. 

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications for the Position:

Job Requirements: 

A baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, electrical engineering, or related field. A combination of formal education and experience highly preferred.

Familiarity with and ability to operate basic and advanced prototyping equipment such as manual and numerical control metalworking equipment, electronics test and measurement equipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, metrology equipment, and wood working equipment. 

Highly motivated, energetic individual with attention to detail and ability to develop innovative and modern solutions to the management, training and support of students, personnel, and equipment.

Minimum of three years of related work experience in one or a combination of fields that would support a facility/campus/building function or trade. 

Excellent oral and written English language skills with the ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the University. 

Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and applications needed for the position.

Proven competence in problem-solving, work agility, attention to detail and prioritization. 

Computer literacy with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. 

Ability to learn, demonstrate and enforce proper health and safety procedures and regulations. 

Ability to perform general clerical functions critical to the maintenance and efficiency of the facilities and equipment.

Ability to work within a budget effectively and monitor expenditures.

Desired Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

Understanding of space improvement processes and maintenance service programs. 

A minimum of one year supervisory experience. 

Experience supervising and training undergraduate and graduate students on the use and operation of equipment. 

Demonstrated mechanical/electrical/plumbing/construction aptitude, corroborated by work history.
