The Department of History is searching for an assistant or early associate professor of public history and/or public memory, with a focus on the Global South, Europe, indigenous communities, and/or transnational/transregional history, to complement current research and teaching in the department’s Public History Initiative (http://phi.history.cornell.edu). We seek a scholar with a PhD in History or a related field who is also grounded in theoretical and methodological approaches in public history and memory studies, including, but not limited to commemorative practices, historic preservation, studies of the built environment, heritage studies, oral history, archival studies, material culture studies, and digital history, with potential research interests including but not limited to migration, race and ethnicity, indigeneity, and decolonization.

This position will be part of the Provost’s new CIVIC initiative in “Humanities, Art, & Public Life,” encouraging collaborations across the university. (Information can be found at: https://provost.cornell.edu/academic-initiatives/radical-collaboration/civic/) “Public Life” marks the myriad ways in which people express themselves and interact, react, discuss, or ignore one another in various attempts to make and re-make the demos. Potential partners include the Einaudi Center for International Studies, the Migrations Global Grand Challenge, Africana Studies, the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program, Communication, Human Centered Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, and Near Eastern Studies.

·         syllabus or teaching statement that speaks to the applicant’s work in public history
·         diversity statement that specifies some of the work the applicant has done to be inclusive and equitable in their research or teaching practices. Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
