  1. Generally younger than 40 years old.
  2. Have a PhD degree from a university or research institution with more than three years of working experience in relevant fields, but the required working years may be reduced for exceptionally strong applicants.
  3.  Have made outstanding research achievements in the field of physics or astronomy, and with the potential to become a leading researcher in the field.

How to Apply:

Interested applicants are encouraged to send CV, three representative academic achievements (within the last 5 years), research statement, colloquium abstract to Ms. Fu (tdli_hr@sjtu.edu.cn) by December 5th, 2022. Short-listed participants will receive an official invitation via email.

SJTU physics and astronomy discipline currently has 170+ faculty members in total. In the past five years, we have published more than 3000 peer-reviewed papers, with 500+ papers are published in top journals such as Science, Nature, and PRL/PRX. We have been approved 400+ research programs from the central government agencies, with a total budget of more than RMB 700 million. In the 2016 Ministry of Education discipline evaluation, SJTU physics was ranked “A” on a par with Tsinghua, Nanjing, and Fudan Universities. In 2022, it was ranked 40th worldwide (4th in China) by US News World Subject Rankings.

About SPA: The Department of Physics of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was established in 1928. It was one of the earliest physics departments in China. In 2015, the Department established a strong program of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and was renamed as the School of Physics and Astronomy (SPA) in 2015. Taking the value of “high starting point, strong foundation, strict requirements, emphasis on practice and innovation”, SPA aims to cultivate top-notch innovative talents, answer important scientific questions and build a world-class school of physics and astronomy.

After a decade of rapid growth, SPA has become one of the most vigorous and comprehensive physics departments nationwide. It covers a broad range of research areas in the field of physics and astronomy, including particle and nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, optics, atomic and molecular physics, laser plasma physics, astronomy and astrophysics, computational physics, and interdisciplinary physics.

SPA is located in the Science Building of Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, covering an area of more than 42,000 square meters, with a conducive working conditions and environment. SPA has a national collaborative innovation center, three key laboratories of the Ministry of Education and one Shanghai key laboratory, and has computational physics platform, micro-nano machining and testing platform and other public platforms.

About TDLI: Proposed by the Nobel laureate Professor Tsung-Dao Lee and with support and endorsement from governments and ministries at national and municipal levels, Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) is a basic research institute established at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in November 2016, aiming to build itself as a world-leading science institute. Resonating with Professor Lee’s vision, the Institute focuses on the most fundamental science questions, and conducts cutting-edge research in physics and astronomy in an effort to shed light on the relationship between the maximum and the minimum in the universe, and the most fundamental and profound laws of interaction in the nature.

By bringing our research to extreme environments or creating extreme conditions, we strive to explore and control exotic and extreme states of matter with extreme detection methods. Eying on the greatest unsolved mysteries of the universe, we are pledged to systemically assemble our teams of close to 100 scientists to carry out pioneering research and collaboration on particle and nuclear physics, astronomy and astrophysics, and quantum science. Today, we’ve witnessed an emergence of innovations and an increasingly active presence in the science community. Looking forward, we envision fostering a supportive, inclusive culture of(táo)(lǐ)(yīn)(yì)(jiā)(ān)(qí)(suǒ) (A verse from classical Chinese poetry describes a harbour where the talented are cultivated and empowered to happily explore their full potential, and people from the outside admire and wish to join.)

The building of TDLI is located in Zhangjiang Science City, covering an area of 56,000 square meters. The Institute will provide conducive working conditions and environment for the talents. It has three experimental platforms and one computing center: dark matter & neutrino experimental platform, laboratory astrophysics experimental platform, topological quantum computation experimental platform and scientific computing center.

Benefits and Welfare: According to relevant policies of Shanghai authority and SJTU, we will provide attractive remuneration package, research start-up funds, the well-decorated transitional talent apartments and relevant housing subsidies, the qualification of supervisor PhD student, the enrollment of graduate students, high-quality medical services at many affiliated hospitals of SJTU and advanced hospitals in Pudong New Area, as well as the preferential admission policies and conditions for applicants' children.
