 The McHenry lab is located within the Department of Neuroscience at Duke University and uses a combination of circuit-based strategies and custom engineered designs to investigate how social information is encoded in neural circuits that regulate motivational and emotional states. The lab uses a combination of state-of-the-art techniques to monitor and manipulate the activity of neurons with anatomical and molecular precision, in awake behaving mice. Collectively, these studies will provide insights into social and motivational processes that are disrupted across a range of conditions, such as major depression, reproductive mood disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. 

 The lab has an opening for an Associate in Research for immediate occupancy, for an initial 1-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. The candidate’s initial focus will be to under the Principal Investigator’s instruction, to help set up the new laboratory, new protocols and procedures, and the mouse colony, then transition efforts towards maintaining the lab, conducting experiments, and training new members. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn valuable technical, managerial, professional, and animal research skills that will be relevant to advancing their career in science or medicine. 

 The applicant must be detail-oriented, independent, proactive, well organized, and able to manage multiple and changing priorities as needed to move experiments and the research program forward, in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to research and work ethic, and a positive attitude are required for this team-based environment. The associate must be completely honest and transparent in all work and communication and bring any mistakes or concerns to the PI as they develop. The associate must conduct himself or herself in a professional manner, strictly adhere to any protocols in place by the lab, Duke, or the PI and be respectful to all lab members at all times and respond to communications or requests in a timely manner. Since the research involves sensitive animal and behavioral testing, there are times when the associate will be expected to attend to an urgent animal health matter without advance planning or scheduling and outside of the typical working schedules. The associate should be prepared to give regular updates on projects and be able to consistently duplicate research efforts. The candidate must be able to follow instruction from the PI with attention to detail and proactive follow up after meetings and meet lab agendas/goals in a timely manner. The candidate must be flexible, efficient, and willing to function in a high-paced environment. The research assistants initial focus will be to work more closely under the Principal Investigator’s instruction and schedule, to create a plan or acquire skills for each project, then transition efforts towards developing these projects in a more independent fashion, with weekly check ins and progress updates. 

 Work Performed:

 Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments and make modifications to existing procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular studies as required. 

 Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes and assemble data sets from experimental results. Experiments including: set up instruments, material, and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests, mouse surgery, mouse behavior, histology, and optogenetics. 

 Help establish and independently maintain a mouse colony; including oversight of breeding colony, tissue collections for genotyping, maintenance of animal colony records, and euthanasia. Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies, and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain laboratory equipment. Must display a high level of accuracy, efficiency, and independence. Due to the nature of the animal work, the candidate must be committed to the lab and work around the schedule of the needs for the animals. 

 Review laboratory methods, manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments. Review work of lower level laboratory personnel and assist in training new personnel. 

 Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience 

 Education: The applicant must hold at least a B.S. degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline. 

 Experience: At least 1 year of recent full-time research experience in a basic science lab related discipline is required, that includes some rodent handling and research component. Additional technical or analytical skills, related to microscopy, chemistry, animal surgery and/or behavior, data management, are preferred but not required. 

 The position is available for an initial one-year period with potential for renewal.
