INTRODUCTION

The Social Psychology area in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a non-tenure-track Research and Teaching Scholar (Assistant Research Professor) with a focus on Diversity Science. This is a two-year position, renewed annually, to conduct research in Diversity Science and teach one related undergraduate course per year.

The successful candidate will develop a Diversity Science research project or projects that would benefit from collaboration with one or more Social Psychology faculty. For instance, their project could focus on understanding stereotyping, prejudice, or discrimination processes from social cognitive (Chaney, Johnson), identity (Chaney, Garr-Schultz), institutional (Pratto), cultural (Ramirez-Esparza), or health approach (Quinn). Special consideration will be given to scholars interested in integrating across research areas and working with multiple Social Psychology faculty, and to candidates who bring unique perspectives to the field that have been traditionally ignored or undervalued. Information about the faculty and their research programs can be found at https://socialpsych.uconn.edu/

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary cohort of CLAS Teaching and Research Scholars and will be offered training and support related to teaching, career development, and resources to improve recruitment and retention of underrepresented students. The scholar will benefit from the following departmental resources for conducting research: access to the PSYC undergraduate participant pool (n = 2,300 annually), ample laboratory space with computer equipment, MindWare and Biopac cardiovascular equipment, and research assistants (including students from the honors program, McNair, and work study). They will also have opportunities to receive advanced statistical training in dyadic, multilevel, and longitudinal analyses through courses and workshops offered in the summer or during the academic year.

The ideal candidate for this position is a recent Social Psychology PhD. We especially encourage individuals from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in academia to apply. The Psychological Sciences Department and the Social Psychology area are both strongly committed to increasing diversity in the academic pipeline, as evidenced by the recent successful hiring of Diversity Science scholars (Chaney, Garr-Schultz).

The position is partially funded by sponsoring faculty members.  Therefore, candidates are strongly encouraged to contact potential faculty sponsors before applying to discuss research fit. Applicants should send a CV, a Diversity statement, at least 2 letters of recommendation, and a research statement (no longer than 4 pages) describing (1) your educational and research background, (2) areas of interest, and (3) what you would like to accomplish in your postdoctoral training. For full consideration, applicants should submit materials by February 1st, 2023.

The Psychological Sciences Department includes Ph.D. programs in Behavioral Neuroscience, Clinical, Developmental, Ecological, I/0, Language and Cognition, and Social Psychology, as well as several areas of inter-program collaboration including Diversity Science. There are currently 58 FT faculty and 130 FT doctoral students. The department and university have a commitment to pursuing inclusive excellence.
