Franklin Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship – Digital Humanities

Deadline: April 17, 2020 (*new date)

The Digital Humanities Initiative at the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute (DHI@FHI) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in critical digital humanities. We are interested in applications that address what the digital as such adds to the humanities. We are open to comparative perspectives. The successful applicant would be asked to lead an investigation addressing such questions as: is the digital humanities a compilation of its parts, for example media and technology studies, art practice, distant reading tools, humanistic data analysis, mapping, etc. --or does it represent a distinctive emerging field with its own theories and norms? How might digital humanities approaches intersect with those grounded in postcolonial, indigenous, labor, disability, or global studies, and intersectional analysis of race/gender/sexuality/class?

The DHI@FHI organizes programs and communities interested in the digital humanities, broadly conceived across the disciplines and in dialog with media studies, technology and ethics, information studies, and related topics. The DHI@FHI is home to the PhD Lab of Digital Knowledge, the Duke-North Carolina Central University Digital Humanities Fellows Program, among other projects.

The Fellow will be expected to teach one course. Apart from focusing on their own research and teaching one course, the Fellow will be expected to give a presentation of their scholarship at the FHI. The Fellow will also be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the DHI@FHI, which may include organizing occasional events and informal mentoring of PhD Lab students. They will also be invited to participate in a working group of early-career visiting scholars based at the FHI. Franklin Fellows are also invited to take advantage of other opportunities to connect with Duke’s vibrant interdisciplinary humanities community.

Applicant should have PhD conferred by June 2020. The fellowship will provide a salary based on the candidate’s qualifications. Postdoctoral fellows are eligible for health and most employee benefits. Research and travel allowance may be provided. This position is a 12-month appointment for AY 2020-2021.

Applicants must submit a cover letter indicating research interests and experiences; Curriculum Vitae; a writing sample (dissertation chapter, refereed journal article, or refereed conference proceeding); and three references (contact information only) via Academic Jobs Online.

Applications received by April 17, 2020 will receive primary consideration, but the position will remain open until filled.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, mentoring and service. The John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute shares this commitment in the spirit of our namesake.
