Chapman University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Comparative Religion within the Department of Religious Studies, Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, effective August 2022. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Religious Studies by August 1, 2022 is required. The successful candidate will be a teacher-scholar whose area of specialization complements existing department faculty expertise in South Asian religions and comparative religious ethics, Christianity and Latinx/Latin American theology, religion and the arts, archeology of ancient Israel, gender studies, Holocaust studies, and interfaith leadership. The candidate should demonstrate a strong research trajectory, including the promise of publications, presentations, and involvement in professional organizations, and provide evidence of a commitment to teaching, creative course development, and student engagement commensurate with the university’s commitment to personalized education. The department greatly values diversity, engaged scholarship, and inclusive pedagogy in fostering academic excellence.

Responsibilities: Tenure-track faculty members are expected to develop and maintain an active research agenda for future tenure consideration and are evaluated on their research/scholarly/creative activity, teaching, and service. The faculty member will teach core courses in world religions and theory and methods as well as additional undergraduate courses appropriate to the candidate’s expertise and maintain active research and publication agendas.
