The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to authorize one open-rank search in the Africana Studies and Research Center (ASRC) at Cornell University with a starting date of July 1, 2023, for a scholar working in one or across the following fields: African and African American Religious Studies and/or Music of the African Diaspora . We welcome applications for a tenure- track appointment at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor from candidates working on Africana religion, theology, spiritual practices, and/or music of Africa and the African Diaspora. Areas in Religious studies might focus on faith traditions such as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism; African diaspora spiritual traditions as practiced in the Caribbean, Latin America and North America. Topics might include the Black sermonic tradition, liberation theology/the Black radical tradition, Africana feminist/womanist theology, the protest and activist tradition in Black churches, institutions and organizations, spirituality and revivalism in the Caribbean and the reinterpretation of traditional African religions in the Americas. Connections to studies of race, ethnicity, nationality, class, gender, sexuality, disability, as well as teaching and research projects anchored in local community and public sphere engagement. In music, topics might include the study of musicology, music theory, music- making and performance and sound, spirituals, gospel and hip-hop genres and Black popular culture, and Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin diaspora traditions informed by a range of interdisciplinary approaches and methods and drawing on history, philosophy and ethnography, as well as the digital arts and humanities, with a grounding on public engagement in campus and community.

Applicants should be prepared to design courses and deliver instruction to graduate and undergraduate students on a 2-2 teaching load and to contribute to the department’s curriculum’s development and design, and cordially engage with students, staff and faculty working across a range of disciplines on campus. We encourage applications from candidates with track records of engagement with their respective fields of expertise from an Africana perspective.

Applicants must have a PhD in hand when the appointment begins in the fall of 2023.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
