INTRODUCTION

El Instituto: Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in Residence in Latinx Studies for the 2022-23 academic year. This is a nine-month, non-tenure track appointment with teaching responsibilities. We seek a colleague who will teach Introduction to Latina/o Studies in a large-enrollment format with Teaching Assistant support; a writing-intensive research methods core course; and additional undergraduate courses, either introductory or advanced-level. Responsibilities may include undergraduate advising and service to the unit and/or campus through participation in committee work.

El Instituto is a multidisciplinary research and teaching institute in the University of Connecticut’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. We advance scholarship, support creative endeavors, and sustain undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the fields of Latinx, Latin American, and Caribbean studies. We advocate meaningful and respectful inclusion of Latinx people, statewide, nationally, and globally. Our undergraduate major in Latina/o and Latin American Studies is a model curriculum for interdisciplinary programs. It unites the teaching of research skills with learning in service of communities. Home to the greatest concentration of Latinx faculty and students at UConn, El Instituto’s students see themselves reflected in our instructors and courses, finding affirmation of Latino cultural wealth and intercultural skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in an area relevant to the field of Latinx studies
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses
  • A commitment to working with a diverse student body
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Evidence of commitment to broadening student participation and integrating social justice concerns into instruction
  • Critical pedagogical techniques that meet the needs of diverse learning styles and affirm Latinx cultural wealth
  • Experience teaching large, core curriculum undergraduate level courses

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2022.  Duties include a teaching load of 21 credit hours of instruction per year or the equivalent. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
