Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division has an opening for a Dark Matter Postdoctoral Fellow to work on particle detector research and development including design, build, operate and optimize instrumentation for a new, crystalline/vapor dual-phase xenon time projection chamber.  Additionally, you will participate in the operation and data analysis of the LZ dark matter search experiment


What You Will Do:

  • Design, build, operate, optimize, characterize, and analyze data from the instrument.

  • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration.

  • Interact with LBNL and other investigators working on similar or related scientific problems.

  • Prepare research papers for publication.

  • Present research findings at seminars and conferences.


What is Required: 

  • Ph.D. in Physics with less than 2 years of experience since Ph.D. thesis.

  • Experience in instrumentation.

  • Experience in scientific data analysis in Python or ROOT (or equivalent, with a willingness to learn one of these two).

  • Demonstrated ability to attain a high level of achievement as an independent researcher.

  • Ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to mentor students.

  • Experience in cryogenics and vacuum systems.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
