Position Description: |
The Physics Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) announces a search for a theoretical postdoctoral position in our Quantum Information Science program. We pursue the development of novel sensing concepts and technology for future experiments searching for new fundamental physics like dark matter and exotic gravitational phenomena. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with theoretical experience related to quantum sensing, in particular quantum optics and/or opto-mechanics, metrology, low-energy detection problems, and similar topics. Experience in more theoretically oriented topics like quantum information theory, and/or particle physics, is also acceptable. LBNL's quantum group involves both theoretical and experimental multidisciplinary work, including collaborations with scientists in other LBNL divisions and other institutions. We also engage in theoretical work to understand the quantum information properties of new physics signals and ways to leverage this for new experiments. In particular, the postdoctoral worker in this new position will be expected to collaborate on current efforts to develop dark matter detectors with quantum-limited sensors (see e.g. https://qquest.lbl.gov/~carney/). They will also be given considerable freedom to pursue their own interests. The community here is vibrant and closely connected to the UC Berkeley quantum groups.
Hires under this posting would be appointed for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 additional years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
