The Laboratory of theoretical physics in Toulouse has an opening for a three-year PhD position in the field of theoretical one-dimensional quantum physics. The starting date is September 2024 (before that is also possible). To apply, please send your curriculum vitae, transcripts of your academic records, and arrange for one or more letters of recommendation to be sent to Aleksandra Petkovic at petkovic@irsamc.ups-tlse.fr or Zoran Ristivojevic at ristivojevic@irsamc.ups-tlse.fr. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Solid knowledge of statistical physics, quantum mechanics, mathematics, and quantum field theory is desired.

Quantum physics in one dimension has become a pillar of modern low-energy physics [1,2,3], owing to remarkable experimental achievements in the field of cold atomic gases and quantum materials. It exemplifies how theoretical predictions can be probed in the lab and vice versa -- how experiments open new directions in theoretical studies.

The aim of this PhD thesis is to theoretically address various questions in one-dimensional many-body systems motivated by recent experiments [4,5,6,7], to make decisive progress in their microscopic description, as well as to propose new experiments. We will focus on the motion of a distinguishable quantum particle (an impurity) through a many-body one-dimensional bath. With this project we aim at developing a theory for the impurity relaxation dynamics, as well as the driven dynamics, and the formation of their bound states (bipolarons). These fundamental questions are relevant for a large class of phenomena. The restricted phase space and the existence of special many-body models in one dimension with many conserved quantities make the quantum impurity problem interesting, often characterized by an unconventional behavior—different from higher-dimensional realisations. The program will be carried out thanks to the combination of state-of-the-art methods from the theory of many-body correlated systems including quantum field theory, Bethe ansatz, bosonization, effective field theories, etc. The work will be mainly done analytically although some numerical evaluations might be present.

The selected candidate will become a member of the group dealing with strongly correlated systems with an expertize in a broad range of topics in condensed matter, such as the magnetism, superconductivity, and low-dimensional quantum matter.
