We are seeking a post-doctoral scientist to join the GSFC X-ray galaxies group (xraydeep.org) at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The successful candidates will be employed by JHU as Assistant Research Scientist and located on-site at the GSFC in Greenbelt, MD under the direction of Drs. Mihoko Yukita, Ann Hornschemeier, and Andrew Ptak. The research will involve (A) analysis and interpretation of X-ray observational data taken with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton on six relatively nearby (d < 10 Mpc) starbursting galaxies; (B) modeling of the X-ray binary emission and other relevant components (AGN, diffuse emission) in those galaxies; and (C) publishing papers and presenting results. Depending on the candidate’s interests, analysis of multiwavelength datasets may also be possible for e.g., measurement of star-formation histories and/or properties of the host galaxies. Candidates should possess a PhD degree in a relevant field by date of appointment. Experience with studies of star-forming galaxies, X-ray binary populations or diffuse X-ray emission and/or X-ray data analysis techniques is desirable, but not critical. We invite applications from those who may have worked in other areas but are interested in these topics. The salary offered will be competitive and commensurate with experience. For information on benefits please follow this link: https://hr.jhu.edu/benefits-worklife/. Funding is available for two years, including some relocation costs, with the possibility of an extension. The appointment is expected to begin as soon as possible after 1 January 2023, and there is some flexibility with respect to remote work from other parts of the USA. Complete applications must be received by October 21, 2022. Candidates must provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae including a complete publications list, a statement of interest, and contact information for three references via Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22819). Questions regarding the position should be address to Mihoko Yukita (myukita1@pha.jhu.edu). The Johns Hopkins University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
