Applications are invited for three postdoctoral positions at Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in the field of star and galaxy formation. Two fellowships are funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and one by the French agence nationale de la recherche (ANR). The project focusses on several facets of the dissipative physics of baryonic matter in the local and high-redshift universe and fosters close interactions between numericists, theorists, modelers and observers. The successful candidates will work primarily on one of the following topics: (1) the on-going ALMA collaboration on molecular line observations of starburst galaxies at high-redshift. The project is foreseen to grow with follow-up observing programs on the James Webb Space Telescope and ESO VLT, (2) numerical experiments dedicated to turbulent dissipation, with openings towards the formation of molecules in the wake of dissipative structures and multiphasic turbulent cascades, (3) statistical analysis of large data sets on the high galactic latitude sky, primarily from the Planck sky survey (dust polarization, CO emission). Candidates should have a strong background in physics and astrophysics and have experience in either observational molecular astrophysics and interferometric (sub-) millimeter observations, high-performance numerical simulations, or statistical analysis depending on the position sought. The team of the ERC MIST (Molecules, magnetic fields and intermittency of cosmic turbulence) project is part of the astrophysics group at the Physics Department of ENS. It is also part of the Observatoire de Paris and has close ties with astrophysicists in the Paris area. The young scientists who will be hired will benefit from this broad and stimulating research environment.
