Title: SCWO Test Engineer - Duke University Pratt School of Engineering

Immediate Need

About Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) and the Duke Team Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) offers the ability to treat any organic waste. Utilizing high temperature and pressure, an environment is created that allows for the complete destruction of organic material, turning waste into water.

Since 2015, The Duke SCWO team has had an operational pilot plant that utilizes this technology. Through ongoing testing, we continue to learn and make improvements to many aspects of the system. A new grant has us beginning to focus on treatment of a new variety of wastes and move into a new phase of research and development. An opportunity exists to join our team and help shape the future of resource recovery and global unmet needs of compact, efficient, and superior waste treatment.

Job responsibility:

•Act as test engineer while the system is on line, and contribute to system maintenance when it is off line

•Perform post run data analysis and generate run summaries. Also perform cross-run comparisons and analysis

•Perform lab tests to determine the effectiveness of waste treatment

•Identify and design experiments to be conducted with the pilot plant

•Help improve the analytical capabilities on the pilot plant (gas & effluent, online and offline sensors and setup, improve robustness and simplify)

•Help improve the process through new suggestions and their implementation (including streamlining of pre-treatment and post-treatment solutions)

Candidate Requirements:

•Data analysis experience. Being at ease with MS Excel is a must, and Python/Matlab would be a plus •Willing to work long shifts on occasion •Comfortable working around sewage sludge and wastewater •Related engineering degree (Chemical/Mechanical/Environmental) and/or operation background •Some physical work is expected during runs (carry and lift supply, stand for extended periods of time, etc.)

Desired Skills and Experience:

•Chemistry lab experience and analytical chemistry knowledge •Experience of work in a chemical and/or industrial environment •Experience with control system and practical application •Hands on experience with pumps and hydraulic systems
