The University of Oregon’s Department of Romance Languages invites applications for a tenure-track position of assistant professor of Spanish Sociolinguistics, to begin in fall 2018. We seek candidates specializing in sociocultural linguistics, contact linguistics, and/or linguistic ethnography. An emphasis on translanguaging will complement our current strengths in language learning, pragmatics, and language ideologies and power. We seek candidates with a strong publication record, promise of continued research productivity, demonstrated excellence in teaching, ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including students of Spanish as a Heritage Language, and professional proficiency in English and Spanish. Professional competence in another language (Romance, indigenous, or other) is also desirable.Competitive applicants will be capable of outstanding research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

We are a diverse and growing department with strengths in Mediterranean Studies, Transatlantic Studies, Cinema, Translation, Poetics, and Gender Studies. The department plays a key role in Latin American Studies, European Studies, African Studies, and Translation Studies, with active participation in the Center for the Study of Women and Society and the Oregon Humanities Center. We particularly welcome applications from scholars who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics or related field in hand by time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate will be prepared to (1) teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, e.g., (Socio)phonetics, Spanish linguistics, Spanish as a Heritage Language, Second-language teaching methods; (2) take an active role in the Language and Society concentration of the undergraduate major in Spanish; and (3) contribute to the development of graduate expertise in sociolinguistics. A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as an interest in collaborating with diverse faculty within Romance Languages (French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish) and across campus in interdisciplinary endeavors (e.g., Linguistics, Ethnic Studies, Education, Women’s and Gender Studies, Latino/a and Latin American Studies) are highly valued. The expected start date is September 2018.
