Occupational Summary

An individual with academic credentials but without a doctorate and not a degree candidate. Assists faculty members in research programs by participating in the research directly or in organizing a program under which the research is carried out. This classification is administered on Campus through the Office of the Provost and in the Medical Center through the Office of the Chancellor for Health Affairs. It is not subject to the Wage and Salary system.

Work Performed

The student will be responsible for performing equilibrium and non-equilibrium all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of the DNA packaging motor complex of bacteriophages phi28 and ascc-phi29. He or she will analyze the simulation data to determine the free energy landscapes, molecular mechanisms, and transition pathways associated with various aspects of motor function, including force generation, coordination of burst-dwell cycle, and nucleotide exchange. Lastly, the student will collaborate with existing students and prepare the research work for a journal publication. He or she will maintain lab safety and upkeep.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

BS in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or bioengineering.

Experience

The project requires students with basic programming skills and passion in computational sciences. Some prior experience in working in a research lab is plus.

Skills

Computer programming in Python, C, or MATLAB. Machine learning is a plus.
