Occupational Summary

The Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at Duke University is seeking an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the area of machine learning. The Adjunct Assistant Professor will teach one course during the fall semester on graduate-level python and machine learning applications for science and engineering. This position is available for one semester, with compensation commensurate with experience. The ideal candidate will have a PhD degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, environmental engineering or allied fields; and is enthusiastic about teaching and learning. This position is an excellent opportunity for those interested in academia, offering the opportunity to obtain rigorous teaching experience prior to embarking on their eventual career path. Screening of candidates will begin immediately until the position is filled.

Work Performed

Teaching duties will consist of preparing, instructing, and conducting assessment for one course during the fall semester machine learning for graduate students in the departments of Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or students with relevant prerequisite course work.

Required Qualifications at this Level


A PhD in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, environmental engineering or allied fields.


The successful applicant will have extensive experience facilitating teaching and learning experiences in coding and machine learning. Teaching experience or mentoring is favorable (undergraduate and/or graduate).


Python, machine learning, extensive background in project-based learning pedagogies, and a track record of commitment to inclusive teaching to diverse groups.
