Seeking

The Program in Theater Arts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology seeks an experienced, curious, and inventive Technical Director with excellent organizational skills for a one year, full-time position at the rank of Technical Instructor. The program in Theater Arts offers an array of courses and experiences in support of the Major, Minor and Concentration in Theater Arts. The Technical Director contributes to the ongoing development of the program by providing organization, expertise and leadership in the coordination and execution of all technical aspects of production; in completing the day to day maintenance and administration of the equipment and fabrication facilities at w97; in mentoring students, and in the occasional teaching of course modules as required. The program in Theater Arts annually presents publicly attended performances, workshops, readings, lectures, exhibitions and creative residencies. In close collaboration and coordination with the Director of Production, and other members of the production team, the Technical Director is responsible for the smooth realization of all reasonable technical and scenic aspects of curricular and non-curricular program events. In addition to ensuring that standards of safety are observed in production, performance, and classroom settings, the Technical Director plays a role in mentoring students who are engaged in technically oriented aspects of the program. Weekly production meetings provide a forum for clear communication. Effective, energetic, and able to thrive in a primarily unsupervised, fast-paced, and collaborative environment, the Technical Director will possess the initiative necessary to aid in the realization of the long- and short-term artistic, pedagogic, research-driven, and community-oriented goals of the program. Qualifications

Position requires an A.B., BFA, BS, or MFA in Technical Direction or other related fields such as production management or scenic design, or equivalent professional experience. The role of Technical Director also requires a minimum of three years of experience in the field. The position will require occasional heavy-lifting of circa 50lbs, climbing ladders, operating a scissor lift, working at heights, a valid driver’s license and willingness to drive. Hours will often include weekend, evening, and night hours. The Technical Director may also handle confidential and/or issues requiring discretion and judgment.

Program Overview

Situated within the Music and Theater Arts section of the School of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences at MIT, the program in Theater Arts offers an array of courses and experiences in support of the Bachelor of Science Major, Minor, and Concentration in Theater Arts. As part of a vibrant interdisciplinary arts community at MIT, the program in Theater Arts annually presents publicly attended performances, workshops, readings, lectures, exhibitions and creative residencies. In AY2018/19, for example, there were two fully produced student productions, one student workshop with a public performances, a mini festival of student play readings and a professional play development workshop both with public presentations, a three day screening series with symposia, a faculty led dance concert, a faculty led cabaret performance and an end of semester design exhibition. Additionally, the MIT Performing series, produced by the Center for Art Science and Technology, produced four creative residencies with public presentations, and presented three guest performances.
