Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Career-Track Research Scientist, Radiation Detection and Imaging to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will be responsible for the development of new concepts and technologies related to radiation detection and radiation imaging with a focus on data analytics which can be applied in areas such as basic physics experiments, radiological safety as well as nuclear security and non-proliferation, and medical imaging. This work will be embedded in ongoing efforts in the Applied Nuclear Physics Program within the Nuclear Science Division.
What You Will Do:
Conduct original research in basic and applied areas. Support ongoing efforts associated with the development of systems and algorithms for radiation detection and imaging.
Research novel data analysis methods and algorithms for radiation detection and/or gamma-ray imaging.
Develop multi-sensor radiation detection and imaging systems that combine radiation detectors with video, Lidar and other contextual sensors.
Plan and execute experimental measurements with these systems.
Explore methods for analyzing the sensor data by fusing the different data modalities in new ways.
Contribute to the development of successful research proposals.
Contribute to dissemination of research results in peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and reports to federal sponsors.
Mentor student and postdoctoral researchers in their research at LBNL and UC Berkeley.
Actively support LBNL’s IDEA initiative and goals, and participate in outreach efforts.
Additional Responsibilities for Career Level:
Lead day-to-day research activities in basic and applied areas.
May supervise technical support staff
What is Required:
PhD or customary highest degree appropriate to physics, nuclear engineering, or related field.
Normally less than five years of relevant experience beyond PhD or customary highest degree appropriate to physics, nuclear engineering, or related field.
Experience in radiation detection and/or radiation imaging.
Experience in statistical analysis, machine learning, or data fusion.
Excellent academic record and evaluations and relevant publication record.
Knowledge of modern radiation detection techniques and basic nuclear physics concepts.
Demonstrated Proficiency in Python, C, and/or C++C++.
Ability to conduct independent scientific enquiry and summarize scientific data for publication.
Effective communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills.
Ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team and to engage with internal and external collaborators.
Ability to interact professionally with staff within the Division, Laboratory and at other laboratories, including Physicists and Engineers.
Additional requirements for Career Level:
Capable of directing the work of technical staff and students.
Desired Qualifications:
Three or more years of relevant experience beyond PhD.
Experience of leading or contributing to successful funding proposals.
Experience in robotics and autonomy.
Experience of working with the Robot Operating System (ROS).
Experience of working with Unix operating systems.
Experience of working with Docker.
Ability to direct the work of technical staff and students.
Additional Desired Qualifications for Career Level:
Six or more years of relevant experience beyond PhD.
Demonstrated experience of leading research projects.
Demonstrated experience of leading or contributing to successful funding proposals.

Salary:
This position is expected to pay between a targeted range of $8708-$13,545 (Career-Track Level), and $10,199-$15,864 (Career Level) per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Notes:
This position will be hired as a full-time, 2 year career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs OR a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
