Position Description
The
Oregon Center for Electrochemistry at the University of Oregon invites
applications for a Research Professor appointment (non-tenure track). Details
about the Center can be found at https://electrochemistry.uoregon.edu/.
The
ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of research excellence in
electrochemical science or engineering (including a strong publication record),
outstanding communication skills, and the drive to develop a world-leading
research and education program within the Oregon Center for Electrochemistry.
The
position will be a 9-month appointment (not soft money), typical for
faculty appointments, with the possibility of securing up to 3 months of summer
salary from collaborative or independent research grant funding. Salary
will be competitive and depend on level (assistant, associate, full) and
qualifications. Excellent retirement/health benefits are included.
The
Research professor will lead an internationally recognized research team within
the Oregon Center for Electrochemistry. They will develop and lead new
sponsored projects as principal investigator, conduct research as part of
existing projects, and coordinate with staff and other investigators to develop
collaborative grant proposals (~50% of time). The Research professor will be
expected to publish their work in international peer-reviewed research
journals. The position will also involve mentoring undergraduate researchers,
doctoral students, and postdoctoral scholars.
The
research professor will also co-manage and teach graduate courses in the Oregon
Center for Electrochemistry’s unique, accelerated masters
internship program in Electrochemical Technology – the only
electrochemistry focused graduate program in the US (~50% of time). The
position will be renewable indefinitely as long as the Electrochemistry
Technology internship program continues and thrives. In our second year (2021-2022)
we educated 21 MS students in the accelerated coursework and placed them in
industry and national laboratory internships with annualized pay of > $80,000/yr.
Demand for the graduates of this program is very strong and we are actively continuing
to grow the program. Inquiries can be sent to Prof. Shannon Boettcher at electrochemistry@uoregon.edu.
The
research professor will have access to all equipment and synthesis facilities
in the Oregon Center for Electrochemistry, our exceptional shared materials
characterization facility CAMCOR
(camcor.uoregon.edu), as well as project seed funding. They will be expected to
also secure sponsored projects to fund research, either as an independent PI or
in collaboration with other faculty.
The
application requires:
- A 1-2 page cover letter describing the candidate’s
interest in the position and career aspirations and contact information
for your references (see below).
- A current curriculum vitae, including list of all
publications.
- Contact information for three prominent scientists or
engineers that are willing to serve as references and speak to the
candidates promise in developing, leading and collaborating in high-impact
research. No formal letters are required for the application.
- A description of the candidate’s research plans,
including specific independent research project proposals and/or possible
collaborative projects with other faculty in the Oregon Center of
Electrochemistry (or elsewhere). The document should be ~ 3-6 pages in
length (the exact length is unimportant). Because the ideal candidate will
lead sponsored research projects and write successful grant applications,
the quality of this document and the proposed work is particularly
important.
The
Oregon Center for Electrochemistry is committed to advancing the career
aspirations of all hires. We envision this position could be filled by a
candidate interested in a long-term career at the University of Oregon, or a
candidate interested in building their portfolio of high-impact research,
teaching/education, and success in government/private grant applications to
secure other high level positions across the US or internationally.
The
minimum requirement is a PhD in chemistry, engineering, physics, materials
science, or a related field. Both candidates with and without postdoctoral
experience are encouraged to apply.
Review of applications
will begin July 10, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. The
start date is flexible, although we would like to have the new hire on-site
before the start of Fall quarter in late September if possible.
