The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured faculty position at all levels in the general area of Space Engineering. Intellectual areas of interest include design of space systems, space propulsion, spacecraft mechanics, dynamics and control, space structures and materials, human space life, remote sensing and spaceborne imaging, space environment, and atmospheric entry. The department intends to grow the area of space engineering over the next five years and the successful candidate is expected to play a leadership role in that effort. This growth will complement major space-related activities at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. The Johns Hopkins Homewood campus is also home to the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in an engineering or related field and will be expected to establish an independent, multidisciplinary, and internationally recognized research program. We seek a colleague who has a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and who will contribute to our community by embracing excellence, diversity and inclusion. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 27 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 23 research and teaching faculty members, 240 undergraduates, 250 graduate students, and 25 postdocs. The Whiting School of Engineering and the Johns Hopkins University actively encourages and supports interdisciplinary research through school-level research centers and cross-divisional research institutes. In addition to the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has strong affiliations with the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI), the Institute for Assured Autonomy, the Johns Hopkins Center for Additive Manufacturing and Architected Materials (JAM2), Center of Environmental and Applied Fluid Mechanics (CEAFM), Laboratory for Computational Sensing + Robotics (LCSR), the Institute for NanoBioTechnology (INBT), the Institute for Data Intensive Engineering and Science (IDIES), and the School of Medicine.
