Description

The Departments of Politics and Computer Science at Brandeis University invite applications for a two-year Kay Postdoctoral Fellow whose research and teaching apply modern artificial intelligence methods to substantive questions in political science. We seek a scholar with expertise in machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI, computational social science, or related data-analytic methods and a strong research agenda focused on politics, government, public policy, or political behavior. The Fellow will conduct interdisciplinary research using AI-based methods to analyze political texts, public opinion, campaigns, policy documents, legislative activity, social media, political narratives, or other forms of political data. The emphasis of the fellowship is on the innovative and rigorous application of existing AI technologies to political science research rather than on the development of new AI architectures. The Fellow will teach two courses each academic year. One of these courses will introduce students grounded in political science to the use of AI-based methods in political science. The other course will be geared toward computer science students who wish to use AI-tools to answer substantive questions in political science. Possible topics include computational text analysis, generative AI for social science research, machine learning for political data, AI-assisted data annotation, political misinformation, data visualization, and the ethics and governance of AI. Instruction should enable students to apply these methods while critically evaluating their validity, limitations, biases, and ethical implications. The Fellow will also engage undergraduate and graduate students in interdisciplinary research through supervised projects, collaborative data collection and annotation, research workshops, and the development of tools for analyzing and visualizing political data.
Responsibilities:
The Kay Fellow will be expected to:
• conduct original research applying AI and computational methods to political science questions;
• maintain an active scholarly agenda leading to peer-reviewed publications in conferences and journals;
• teach one course per semester at the intersection of AI and political science;
• mentor students conducting computational political science research;

Qualifications:
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Political Science or Public Policy with demonstrated technical training in Computer Science, Computational Social Science, Data Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field by the start of the fellowship.
Strong candidates will demonstrate:
• a substantive research agenda in politics, government, public policy, or political behavior;
• experience applying generative AI, machine learning, natural language processing, or related methods to social or political data;
• the ability to teach computational methods to students with varied technical backgrounds;
• evidence of, or strong potential for, excellence in research and teaching; and
• an understanding of the methodological and ethical challenges associated with AI-based research.

The appointment is intended to support an emerging scholar who can strengthen connections between political science and computer science while advancing the rigorous and socially responsible application of modern AI technologies to the study of politics.

The salary for this position is $64,000 with benefits, pending budget approval.
Applications are due January 31, 2027.
