Position Description

We invite expressions of interest for two postdoctoral positions within the ERC Synergy Grant COSMOMAG, a collaborative project involving Axel Brandenburg (Nordita and Stockholm University), Chiara Caprini (CERN and University of Geneva), Andrii Neronov (Université Paris Cité), and Franco Vazza (University of Bologna).

The COSMOMAG project aims to uncover the origin of cosmological magnetic fields by developing a unified theoretical and numerical framework that connects their generation in the early Universe to present-day observations. The project addresses the problem across cosmic history: from the generation of magnetic fields in the early Universe, through their evolution over cosmological timescales, to the prediction of observable signatures today. These predictions will be tested primarily through gamma-ray, radio, and gravitational-wave observations.

The two postdoctoral researchers will join the group of Dr. Chiara Caprini and will focus their research respectively on:

We seek motivated and dynamic candidates with a strong background in early-Universe cosmology and the Standard Model of particle physics. Previous experience with numerical simulations of the early Universe and/or of the electroweak and QCD phase transitions will be considered a significant asset. The successful candidates will benefit from a highly collaborative research environment within the COSMOMAG project, including frequent scientific exchanges and visits among the participating Institutions.

The positions are three-year appointments, expected to begin in autumn 2026.

The appointments are jointly hosted by CERN and LPENS (Laboratoire de Physique de l’École Normale Supérieure). The first year will be spent in the Theory Department at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland), followed by two years at LPENS in Paris (France). Relocation from the Geneva area to the Paris area after the first year is a strict requirement of the position.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree (or expect to obtain one before the start of the position).
