Postdoc Position in Physics of Evolving Living Matter

Assistant Professor Andrea Giometto’s Physics of Evolving Living Matter research group within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University seeks a postdoctoral associate. The position is for three years, pending satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.

The position is open to candidates who are interested in studying how physical constraints affect the evolution of extreme cell sizes in the model eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and in pursuing a combination of theory and experiments, the relative weight of which will depend on the candidate’s background and interests. The ideal candidate would have prior experience in the lab in Biological Physics, Cell Biology, Soft or Active Matter Physics, or experimental Microbiology and Evolution, and hold a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related fields by early 2024. Most importantly, the ideal candidate should be passionate about research at the interface of Physics and Biology and to be part of a collaborative lab environment. The postdoctoral scholar will be based at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and will collaborate extensively with the Genome Maintenance and Evolution group (PI: Marco Fumasoni) at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Lisbon, Portugal. This project is funded by the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP). The position(s) will initially be available for one year with a potential renewal for two or more years.

Pay Ranges: The successful candidate will be offered a Postdoctoral Associate position for 12 months, with possibility of extension based on performance and fund availability. The hiring offer range for this position is $56,484 to $80,000 depending on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria: • Prior relevant work or industry experience. • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position. • Academic Discipline • Unique applicable skills.
