Position Description

Associate/Full Professor or a Professor of Practice Fiction Writer
The Department of Literatures in English at Cornell University, along with its Program in Creative Writing, is conducting a search for a fiction writer, prominent and recognized in their field, for appointment, as appropriate, as an associate/full professor or a professor of practice. (A tenured appointment requires reviews at the department, college and university levels.) The candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include leading both undergraduate and graduate seminars in fiction writing, an introductory undergraduate creative writing course that incorporates both fiction and poetry, a graduate seminar in pedagogy, and, occasionally, first-year undergraduate writing seminars. Creative writing professors also oversee graduate student theses and serve on the annual MFA admissions committee. Requirements include at least two books of fiction published by reputable presses; chapbooks and self-published work will not be accepted. Our Creative Writing Program offers a fully funded two-year Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry or fiction. Students who have defended their theses are offered two additional years as lecturers in Literatures in English. We also offer a creative writing concentration to undergraduate English majors, and an undergraduate minor in creative writing for non-majors.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
