Position Description
The Associate in Research will design and perform experiments, analyze results, and assist in managing the laboratory. Performed experiments will be related to ongoing as well as new projects developed by the candidate with the guidance of more experienced colleagues. The candidate will receive training directly from the principal investigator and experience trainees. Contributions will merit authorship in resulting publications. This position requires a minimum degree of a BS/BA. The research project focuses on uncovering genes and neuronal populations necessary for the normal progression of spontaneous activity during neurodevelopment. This project uses fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) as an experimental system. The research involves the following techniques: ● Imaging of neural activity using fluorescent microscopy ● Analysis of live imaging data ● Manipulation of neural activity ● Fly genetics The predicted time allocation is: ● Designing and performing experiments (40%): This includes planning and strategizing experiments, collecting data, and ensuring documentation of results. ● Analyzing results (50%): The candidate is expected to spend time analyzing the experimental results. This includes processing and organizing the data for visualization and statistical analysis to draw conclusions. ● Helping manage the laboratory (10%): This may include maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, supervised undergrads, assisting with administrative tasks, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain research experience and publish in preparation for graduate or med school. It is preferred that the candidate commits for two years, with a minimum commitment of one year requested.
