Position Description

The Sherwood Lab, part of the Department of Biology at Duke University, is seeking a full-time Associate in Research to join a research program focused on understanding how basement membranes regulate tissue development, maintenance, aging, and disease.

The lab studies basement membranes, specialized extracellular matrices that surround and support tissues and organs. Using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, we combine genetics, CRISPR-based genome engineering, live imaging, and quantitative microscopy to investigate how basement membranes are assembled, remodeled, and maintained in vivo.

To support these efforts, the postgraduate researcher will learn and perform a variety of experimental procedures, including CRISPR-based genome editing, molecular cloning, C. elegans genetics, fluorescence microscopy, live-cell imaging, quantitative image analysis, and molecular biology techniques. The researcher will work closely with the PI and other lab members to support ongoing projects and develop independent research skills.

Applicants should be motivated, dependable, highly organized, and able to work effectively within a collaborative research environment. Strong communication skills and careful attention to detail are essential. This position is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking additional research experience before pursuing graduate, medical, or professional school training.

Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a related field. Prior research experience in molecular biology, genetics, microscopy, image analysis, or model organisms is highly desirable.

The position is available beginning Summer 2026, with flexible start dates based on candidate availability. For more information, visit the Sherwood Lab website.
