Duke University, Duke Global Health Institute
Position Description
The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI), Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy, and Duke Global Health Innovation Center at Duke University in Durham, NC are jointly conducting a national search for a senior faculty position (Associate Professor or Professor level) with significant expertise and experience in global health innovation, health policy, and/or health financing, to support the research and policy efforts of the Duke Global Health Innovation Center and Duke more broadly. We are seeking a candidate with an entrepreneurial spirit and a practical understanding of innovation as something new—or newly adapted within a local context—that produces meaningful impact. Innovation may take the form of a product, service, program, enterprise, or applied solution, and successful innovation should be effective, scalable, sustainable, and equitable. Specific topics, populations, and contexts are flexible, though we are especially interested in applicants with experience leading research, policy analysis, and/or operational research on the development, introduction, and scale-up of health innovations in low-resource contexts globally, as well as broad experience in policy engagement. We welcome non-traditional team science-oriented individuals, including those who have moved among academia, government, multilaterals, social enterprise, implementation organizations, or other practitioner settings. We also seek candidates with significant management and leadership experience, including management of people, budgets, and organizations, who could serve in a faculty leadership capacity at the Duke Global Health Innovation Center. The successful candidate should be able to represent the Center externally, engage funders, governments, and implementation partners, contribute to business development, and, as needed, travel domestically and internationally to advance partnerships and funded programs. We highly value mentorship and teaching and seek an applicant who is passionate about engaging in these activities alongside their research and policy efforts. This faculty member would have the opportunity to engage in direct mentorship with undergraduate students, often Global Health majors; with graduate students in DGHI’s Master of Science in Global Health Program and other programs across Duke; with doctoral students from across the university including the medical school; and with postdoctoral scholars and junior faculty, to participate actively in their ongoing studies. They would also have the opportunity to develop classes related to global health systems, innovation, health policy, and financing, to expand the course offerings to students interested in pursuing this field, or to teach existing courses. This will be a full-time 9 or 12-month appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with primary appointment in DGHI. The faculty position will be a regular-rank non-tenure track position in either the research or practice track. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, with the possibility of joint appointments in other Departments or Schools at Duke. The initial appointment is for three years with eligibility for reappointment at the conclusion of this term. Because this is a faculty leadership role with substantial collaboration, teaching, mentoring, and partnership responsibilities, candidates should be able to work in the United States and be present in Durham regularly, with relocation or substantial on-campus engagement expected. We seek applicants with an established track record of extramural funding from diverse sources, including governments, foundations, and industry. Long-term salary support for this position will come predominately from extramural grant funding, with potential additional contributions from internal sources of funding (e.g., teaching, administrative roles) over time. Competitive candidates therefore must be able to demonstrate their ability to articulate the value proposition of their work so that they develop funded programs that are sustainable and additive to the Center's portfolio. DGHI and Duke-Margolis are dedicated to supporting the faculty member to be successful in their transition to Duke. Background DGHI was created in 2006 as a university-wide institute with faculty from across Duke. DGHI has an expansive vision: to achieve health equity for vulnerable groups and individuals around the world. We work to prepare global health leaders through world-leading interdisciplinary education programs; seek innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing global health challenges by conducting research, designing policies, and implementing evidence-based interventions; and partner for change by engaging international and local organizations in locally grounded, collaborative projects. DGHI values humility, compassion, respect, cultural sensitivity, collaboration, diversity and inclusion, and commitment to impact.
