Position Description
Occupational Summary
Assists Dr. Brinnae Bent on a project titled Advancing Ecological Monitoring Through Explainable AI in Drone and Satellite-Based Marine Wildlife Surveys by participating in the research directly or in organizing a program under which the research is carried out. This classification is administered on Campus through the Office of the Provost and in the Medical Center through the Office of the Chancellor for Health Affairs. It is not subject to the Wage and Salary system.
Work Performed
Major
responsibilities will include:
• Develop
and train state-of-the-art object detection models (e.g., YOLOv9) to identify
wildlife, including seabirds, humpback whales, harbor seals, sea otters, and
oyster reefs, from drone imagery of natural habitats.
• Apply
post hoc explainability techniques (e.g. Grad-CAM, LIME, example-based
explanations) to existing drone and satellite-based wildlife detection models.
• Contribute
to ecological research and conservation policy through more transparent and accurate
explainable AI systems.
• Contribute to both model development and the application of explainability frameworks

Education/Training: An individual with academic credentials but without a doctorate and not a degree candidate
