Position Description
The Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University is seeking a Lecturing Fellow in Communications to provide instruction and support for professional graduate students in its Master of Environmental Management (MEM), Master of Forestry (MF), and Duke Environmental Leadership (DEL) programs. The MEM, MF, and DEL are two-year degree programs that train students for careers focused on solving complex environmental problems and draw individuals from nearly all undergraduate backgrounds. Approximately 350 professional students are in residence in a given academic year, with a significant number of international students whose first language is not English. Areas of specialization within the MEM program include: Business and the Environment, Energy and the Environment, Environmental Analytics and Modeling, Environmental Economics and Policy, Environmental Health and Ecotoxicology, Coastal and Marine Systems, Community Engagement and Environmental Justice, and Terrestrial and Freshwater Environments. The Lecturing Fellow in Communications will develop and teach up to three courses per year covering professional writing and speaking, including professional presentations, and will also support broader curriculum goals to integrate communications training in existing classes and coursework. In addition, the Lecturing Fellow will direct the Nicholas School Communications Studio and oversee the training and activities of its MEM consultants, and through the Communications Studio will design and coordinate in-house structured support for professional students whose native language is not English. The initial appointment will be for two years starting July 1, 2023, and will be renewable based on performance and continued programmatic needs. The Lecturing Fellow is a non-tenured, non-regular rank faculty position. A PhD degree and related teaching experience are required. The course will be taught in-person at Duke University’s Durham, NC campus, with regular travel (two to three times per semester) to the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC.
