Duke University Medical Center, Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery maintains a highly skilled clinical practice with a national and international referral base and reputation. Our clinical services include 25 neurosurgeons who are engaged in all clinical sub-specialties of neurosurgery at Duke’s three hospitals (Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, and Duke Raleigh Hospital). We also provide neurosurgical care at the Durham VA Hospital. As part of Duke Health, we provide a multidisciplinary, team approach to care and work to uphold the values and tradition represented by Duke University Health System. New quality and safety initiatives are focused on patient satisfaction and outcomes. In 2017 survival rates are among the highest of the nation's top neurosurgery centers, and readmission rates are at an all-time low.
Our research team is led by a productive group of clinically active neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, surgeon scientists, and eight dedicated PhD researchers. Overall, the team has been awarded more than $22 million in grant support. The internationally recognized Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, recognized as a Program of Distinction within Duke Health, is housed within the Department of Neurosurgery.
Our comprehensive residency training program is among the best in the U.S., and fellowships are offered in six sub-specialty areas. Our leadership team is dedicated to the training of doctors wishing to specialize in the field of neurosurgery – and ensuring that our trainees leave Duke with the surgical skill and expertise needed to manage the most complex of patient needs; the ability to lead others; the highest level of professionalism, and marketability as they move on in their careers
