Position Description

Postdoctoral researcher positions in theoretical condensed matter physics are available in Prof. Haruki Watanabe’s research group in the Department of Physics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The postdoctoral researcher will work primarily with Prof. Haruki Watanabe, a newly appointed faculty member at HKUST, and is expected to contribute actively to the research program of his group. HKUST hosts a strong and vibrant Condensed Matter Theory community. In addition to Prof. Watanabe’s group, the department includes faculty members such as Prof. Xi Dai, Prof. Kam Tuen Law, Prof. Junwei Liu, Prof. Hoi Chun Po, and Prof. Xue-Yang Song. The successful candidate will benefit from a stimulating research environment and ample opportunities for scientific interactions within the department.

The position is expected to start as early as March 2026, with flexibility depending on the candidate’s availability. The monthly salary ranges from HK$28,000 to HK$40,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment will initially be for one year (12 months), renewable subject to performance and mutual agreement. Fringe benefits, including medical and dental benefits and annual leave, will be provided where applicable. Opportunities to attend and present at international conferences and workshops will be provided, with expenses covered in accordance with university regulations.

Qualifications
  • PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics or a closely related field
  • Strong potential for independent research
Experience in one or more of the following areas is particularly desirable:
  • Topological phases of matter
  • Generalized symmetries and symmetry-based classification of quantum phases
  • Non-equilibrium quantum systems, including Lindbladian dynamics and open quantum systems
  • Strongly correlated quantum many-body systems
How to apply:
The position remains open until filled; applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applicants should send a Curriculum Vitae with a publication list directly to Prof. Haruki Watanabe (hwatanabe@ust.hk) by email. The subject line of the email should be 'Postdoc-Physics-HKUST’.
