Position Description

The Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts at Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Science, Technology, and Society beginning in July 2026. We are especially interested in applicants who make use of anthropological methods in their approach to STS, and whose teaching and research focus on questions of technology as they intersect with disability, gender, indigeneity, poverty, race, sexuality, and/or other social identities and experiences.

The annual teaching load is five courses. All faculty at Harvey Mudd College contribute to the Core Curriculum, which includes disciplinary courses, a first-year course in academic writing, and a course centered on the relationship between science and society. In addition, candidates will advise students at the departmental and institutional levels. The successful candidate will demonstrate promise in teaching, mentoring, and engaging students, including those from historically underserved or underrepresented backgrounds. Candidates are expected to have completed their Ph.D. by July 1, 2026.

Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective, academically challenging institution that offers majors in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Across departments, the college is committed to broadening participation in STEM fields. This position is housed in the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts — an interdisciplinary department supporting the college’s liberal arts program. Harvey Mudd’s membership in the Claremont Colleges provides significant opportunities for collaboration with colleagues at the other undergraduate schools in our consortium and at the Claremont Graduate University. The consortium includes intercollegiate departments and programs such as Africana Studies, American Studies, Asian American Studies, Media Studies, and STS, among others.

Application Procedure:

For full consideration, applications should be received by Sept. 2, 2025. Please submit only a cover letter and a CV. In their cover letter, applicants are encouraged to define their research area, how it aligns with key questions in STS, briefly describe two classes they would be excited to teach, discuss how the distinctive features of Harvey Mudd align with their professional aspirations and describe at least one inclusive teaching or mentoring practice that demonstrates an ability to educate students from a diverse range of backgrounds, ensuring they can thrive in their undergraduate career.

Those selected for a second round of reviews will be asked to submit additional materials: three letters of reference, course evaluations (if available), a statement of teaching philosophy, a research statement, two sample syllabi, and a sample of scholarly work. We expect to complete Zoom interviews by Oct. 17, 2025. The salary range for the position is $100,000 to 110,000 along with a full health and retirement benefits package, start-up funds for research and teaching, and relocation costs. Harvey Mudd College is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all qualified individuals.
