The ATLAS group at IFIC-Valencia invites applications to pursue a PhD in electronics engineering for particle detectors.

IFIC (Instituto de Física Corpuscular) is a joint centre of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Valencia (UV), devoted to research in Particle, Astroparticle and Nuclear Physics and its applications, covering both the theoretical and experimental aspects of these fields. More information about the IFIC the can be found at: http://ific.uv.es

The ATLAS research group at IFIC has greatly contributed to the construction of the hadronic Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) and Semiconductor Tracker (SCT), and it is very active in the upgrade of the TileCal electronics and the construction of the new inner tracker (ITk) for the Phase-II upgrade towards the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Furthermore, the group is involved in research and developments of novel technologies to readout particle detectors in future accelerators. We offer a PhD position for a maximum of 4 years to join the IFIC-Valencia ATLAS group towards a PhD thesis for the development of novel readout system for Multi Pixel Photon Counters.

The successful candidate will join the IFIC-Valencia-TileCal group and contribute to research on particle detectors. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn and apply advanced Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design techniques, as well as software languages for hardware control and firmware development techniques for System-On-Chip and FPGAs and implementation of Artificial Intelligence algorithms for real-time sensor signal reconstruction. In addition to gaining technical skills, as a member of the IFIC-Valencia ATLAS group the candidate will also participate in the operation activities of the ATLAS experiment, which will provide valuable experience in particle detection and data analysis. Overall, the successful candidate will have the chance to work on cutting-edge research projects and collaborate with a team of experienced researchers in the field.

Applicants must hold a degree in Electronics Engineering or Experimental Physics giving access to PhD studies from a University outside the European Union by the time of enrollment in the PhD program. Candidates are expected to have strong interest in electronics design for particle detectors and be capable of personal initiative to develop a complete data acquisition system. Good software and firmware skills (C++, Python, VHDL) and previous research experience in experimental particle physics would be desirable.

Interested candidates are requested to send their application (including a motivation letter, CV, academic transcripts, and the contact information of two persons who could provide letters of reference) at: alberto.valero@cern.ch
