Position Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.

This position will focus on advancing theoretical frameworks for quantum-limited and quantum-enhanced detection, with a strong emphasis on applications in experimental searches for new physics. This role is hosted in the Quantum Measurement Group (https://quantum-measurement.lbl.gov/), and supervised by PI Daniel Carney.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop advanced techniques to surpass the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) and enable quantum-coherent readout of multiple devices.

  • Conduct original research both independently and in collaboration with others.

  • Collaborate with researchers at LBNL and other institutions on related scientific challenges.

  • Apply independent judgment and make original contributions at a professional level.

  • Author and prepare research publications for peer-reviewed journals.

  • Present research outcomes at seminars, workshops, and scientific conferences.

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to undergraduate and graduate students as appropriate.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support research and program goals.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in physics or a closely related field.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively to large-scale software projects.

  • Proven capability to conduct independent research as well as collaborate within a research team.

  • A relevant publication record and demonstrated proficiency in presenting scientific results, both in writing and orally.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: quantum sensing, theory development aimed at experimental searches for new physics, and foundational knowledge of particle physics.

The posting will remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration please apply by close of business on November 15, 2025.

How to Apply:

The following requested application materials listed below must be submitted through Academic Jobs Online:

  1. Research Statement - 3 page limit not including citations and figures.

  2. Curriculum Vitae – include up to 5 most relevant publications in the CV

  3. Reference Letters –  Arrange to have 3 letters of reference submitted online by the reference writers at this site, with at least one, preferably two, external to LBNL/UC Berkeley.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience when first assuming the position.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,757 - $6,903 and is expected to start at $6,475 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. A REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
