Position Description

The Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences invites applicants for a Magnetometry Investigation Scientist for the NASA Psyche spacecraft mission. The Magnetometry Investigation Scientist performs feasibility studies of detecting Psyche’s remanent magnetization from orbit including magnetosphere reconstruction, dipole estimation, spherical harmonic analyses and development of predictive tools for solar wind conditions. They also participate in data processing and the development of the ground data system for the Psyche Magnetometer. The Magnetometry Investigation Scientist will join the Psyche science team, under the direction of the Magnetometry Investigation Lead, Professor Benjamin Weiss. The Psyche mission is NASA’s Discovery mission to explore the largest metal-rich body in the solar system, asteroid (16) Psyche: https://psyche.ssl.berkeley.edu/

The candidate should have a Ph.D. in space physics, plasma physics, planetary magnetism, astrophysics or related fields, with a background in numerical modeling and programming. Excellent oral and written communication skills are important. The position will have a duration of least one year with the possibility of extension for multiple years.
