The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics invites applications for a 3-year Research Scientist position, to develop software and analyze data for the CHORD radio telescope. CHORD is currently under construction, with a 64-dish pathfinder expected in late 2024, and the full 512-dish array with VLBI outriggers in 2025/6.

CHORD has world-leading science programs in 21-cm galaxies and intensity mapping, FRB astrophysics, pulsar search and timing, slow transients, and cosmic magnetism. Applications from candidates interested in any of these topics, or in high-performance computing, are encouraged.

The computing challenges of CHORD are extreme. In addition to high-level scientific research, the Research Scientist position will be partly focused on developing cutting-edge algorithms, real-time processing software, and offline analysis pipeline software for CHORD. The CHORD team at Perimeter Institute includes Kendrick Smith, Dustin Lang, Erik Schnetter, and Seth Siegel, along with talented postdocs and students.

Applicants must have a PhD in astrophysics or a related field (or equivalent experience), and outstanding software skills. Prior experience in radio astronomy, high-performance languages (C++/Julia), and GPU programming are helpful but not essential.

In order to ensure full consideration of your application please submit the following: curriculum vitae, publications list, research statement, contact information for 3 referees, and a link to an example of software written (completely or in part) by the applicant.

Applications will be reviewed starting November 6, but the posting will remain live until filled. Our target start date is fall 2024 or sooner, depending on the candidate's availability. Base salary will be $95K CAD/year.

Perimeter Institute is committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from racialized persons/persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.  Applicants who require special accommodation in order to complete their application/interview are encouraged to contact accessibility@perimeterinstitute.ca for assistance.
