Position Description
Pomona College seeks to hire an economist whose primary research
interests are in macroeconomics. Qualified candidates should complete their Ph.D.
by the start date, July 1, 2026. The preferred candidate will start at the rank
of assistant professor; although advanced assistants and early associate
professors with evidence of teaching effectiveness and research excellence will
also be considered.
Faculty at Pomona College teach two courses per semester and, after their first year, are expected to advise students and engage with service in the department and in the college. Faculty are also expected to maintain an active research portfolio. The Economics Department makes every effort to support tenure-track faculty with teaching responsibilities that reflect their research interests and goals. Moreover, the College offers many forms of support for scholarship, including a full-year, pre-tenure research leave in the fourth year, after a successful third-year review.
Pomona College’s student body consists of approximately 1,700 students, over 23% of whom are first generation college students. The College values access to higher education and is committed to need-blind admissions and to a no-loan financial aid policy. Additionally, the College promotes student academic success by maintaining a student-to-faculty ratio of eight to one and a commitment to a residential liberal arts education. Faculty at Pomona College are also actively engaged in their students’ academic development, serving academic advisors and routinely supervising senior thesis projects.
Founded in 1887, Pomona College is the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, a unique constellation of five small contiguous undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions located in southern California, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Students at the Claremont Colleges can cross-register for courses at any of the colleges, and faculty and staff across the colleges often collaborate. Currently, the Department of Economics consists of 13 tenured or tenured track faculty members, and there are more than 50 economists at the Claremont Colleges.
