Position Description

【Title】
Seeking a few Postdoctoral Researchers (26-1454)

【Laboratory / Division】
Category Theoretical Physics RIKEN ECL Research Unit, Division of Fundamental Mathematical Science, RIKEN Center for Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (RIKEN ECL Unit Leader:Kantaro Ohmori)

【Outline of Laboratory / Division】
The RIKEN Center for Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (iTHEMS) is a research hub that builds on mathematics and theoretical sciences to create new knowledge and value across a wide range of fields, including nature, life, society, and information.
Category Theoretical Physics RIKEN ECL Research Unit studies and exploits quantum field theory, the universal framework underlying physics from particle physics to condensed matter and quantum information, using mathematical structures such as category theory and higher algebra. Building on the recently discovered generalized and non-invertible symmetries, we develop a systematic framework that translates desired macroscopic behaviors of matter into the microscopic quantum models that realize them. Combined with tensor networks and lattice models, our aim is an "algebraic calculus" that guides the design and simulation of quantum systems with desired properties.

Job title
Postdoctoral Researcher, a few positions

Job description
This position is for Postdoctoral Researchers who will join the Category Theoretical Physics RIKEN ECL Research Unit, iTHEMS, and advance the JST PRESTO project "Lattice Construction of Quantum Phases via Higher Complete Sets" in the PRESTO "Uncharted Quantum" Research Area, together with the principal investigator, Kantaro Ohmori.

The project aims to establish a framework for systematically constructing lattice models that realize quantum phases, starting from categorical and algebraic descriptions of quantum field theory (generalized symmetries, non-invertible symmetries, higher algebra, and related structures). The  successful candidate will work on research related to one or more of the following:

 - Categorical and algebraic structures in quantum field theory, in particular generalized and non-invertible symmetries and their applications
 - Conformal field theory and topological field theory, and their realizations in quantum many-body systems
 - Constructive and algebraic descriptions of quantum many-body systems, including approaches based on tensor networks
 - Mathematical structures relevant to quantum field theory, such as category theory, higher algebra, and algebraic topology

We also welcome proposals for the researcher's own research themes that contribute to the goals of the Unit. In addition, we expect the successful candidate to take an active part in exchange with researchers from other fields within the interdisciplinary research environment of iTHEMS.

Note that, under the scheme for self-directed research activities by early-career researchers in competitive research funding, part of the researcher's effort may be devoted to their own research activities — including externally funded projects that do not cover their own salary, such as KAKENHI — subject to the applicable requirements and procedures.

The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.

【Qualification】
The candidate should possess a doctoral degree or is expected to obtain a doctoral degree by the starting date.

【Work location】
RIKEN Wako Campus (2-1 Hirosawa, Wako, Saitama 351-0198)
RIKEN may order the employee to change work locations, if necessary, in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

【Salary and benefits】
1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, up to March 31, 2030.
2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.

In principle, the first two months of employment are considered a trial period.

Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance.
Discretionary work, commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied.

The approximate amount of salary at the time of employment:
The total amount of monthly discretionary work allowance and monthly salary at the time of hiring will be 480,000JPY or more.

RIKEN has implemented a telecommuting system that allows employees to work from home or other locations permitted by RIKEN.

This position falls under the specialized duties discretionary work system; one working day will be calculated as 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Days off include Saturdays and Sundays, public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan. 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days depending on the month of employment), special paid leave (caring for a sick child, family nursing care, etc.), and work life balance holidays (up to 7 days depending on the month of employment).
There are also additional leave systems such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and family nursing care leave.
Smoking is entirely prohibited on site.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).
* Eligible to apply for the MEXT Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi).

RIKEN is actively undertaking initiatives to promote gender equality and diversity, and moving forward with the establishment of a diverse and vibrant research environment. If multiple candidates are found to have the same aptitude following a fair assessment, active efforts will be made to recruit female candidates.

*The Wako Campus has an on-site daycare, RIKEN Kids Wako. For details, please send an email to kids@riken.jp.
