Postdoctoral Positions at RIKEN iTHEMS through the Special Postdoctoral Researcher (SPDR) Program

The Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Center (iTHEMS) at RIKEN is inviting applications for the RIKEN Special Postdoctoral Researcher (SPDR) Program for the 2027 intake. iTHEMS provides an exceptional research environment for young researchers in theoretical and mathematical sciences across various disciplines, including physics, mathematics, biology, computational science, information science, and more.

About the SPDR Program

The SPDR Program is a prestigious postdoctoral program at RIKEN designed to foster the development of outstanding early-career scientists by providing them with the opportunity to conduct independent research at RIKEN. Selected researchers will receive: A three-year contract with competitive salary and research funding. Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and an interdisciplinary collaborative environment. Support for career development, including mentorship and networking opportunities.

Why Choose iTHEMS?

iTHEMS is a unique research hub at RIKEN that promotes interdisciplinary collaborations among theoretical scientists from diverse fields. We encourage creativity and innovation through our active seminar series, workshops, and international research collaborations. SPDR fellows at iTHEMS will have the opportunity to interact with a dynamic community of researchers and engage in cutting-edge theoretical and computational research.

Eligibility & Application Process

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or expect to obtain one before the designated start date. The application for the SPDR Program must be submitted directly to RIKEN via the official application page:
RIKEN SPDR Program
The application deadline is 5pm April 2, 2026 (Japan Standard Time) for the registration. All the application documents including reference letters should be submitted by  5pm April 9, 2026 (Japan Standard Time).
Candidates interested in being hosted at iTHEMS should indicate iTHEMS as their preferred host organization in their application and contact a potential host researcher at iTHEMS in advance.
