Human Computer Interaction / community-based design approaches, usability and evaluation assessment

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***
Position Description
A postdoctoral associate position is available in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences in the College of Science and Technology at Temple University.
For this position, co-supervised by Richard Souvenir and Stephen MacNeil, we welcome multidisciplinary applicants with a focus on HCI, Human-AI interaction, or Explainable AI (XAI). The project has specific applications in computer vision, so prior experience in CV and/or ML is a benefit.
The successful candidate will complement the existing team of researchers working on applied research in real-world settings and have the opportunity to lead projects that investigate the societal impacts of AI, particularly in the workplace where employees are currently using AI systems. Our research focuses on how workers develop AI literacy skills necessary to perform their work, how they develop trust and confidence in AI assistants, and how their understanding and perceptions of AI systems evolve as they continue to use these systems over time.
The key responsibilities are to:
-
design surveys, interviews, and participant observation protocols;
-
conduct mixed-methods research combining clickstream data with participant observations;
-
engage in a human-centered design process to develop intelligent user interfaces;
-
communicate effectively with CV and ML researchers by understanding their technical goals and communicating design decisions and study results clearly; and
-
guide and supervise junior HCI researchers.
The ideal candidate would have:
-
a Ph.D. in computer science or related fields;
-
experience conducting human-subjects experiments in either lab or field settings; and
-
experience publishing in AI or HCI venues such as CHI, IUI, UIST, AAAI, or NeurIPS
Application: Candidates should submit their cover letter, current CV, and three references (one reference should be from the candidate's doctoral supervisor).
The position is available immediately, and we will accept applications until the position is filled. The initial appointment is for one year, with renewal dependent on continued funding.
