Event Description

The Swiss Summer Student Particle Physics Program (S3P3) is organized by the particle physics groups of ETH Zürich, the University of Zürich, EPFL, the University of Geneva and the University of Bern. It is supported by the Swiss Institute of Particle Physics (CHIPP) and the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT). The program is aimed at International BSc and MSc Degree students (PhD students cannot apply) in Physics and Applied Physics on a highly competitive basis. Engineering students with a background and interest in particle physics are also welcome. Undergraduate students should be at least in their 3rd year at the time of the application.

The program will allow students to work on detector development or perform data analysis in particle physics. We cover different topics, from research on exotic atoms - where particle physics, atomic physics and quantum optics meet - to research on neutrino, flavour and high-energy physics, dark matter searches and astroparticle physics. Selected students will contribute to the upgrade of different detectors and/or analysing data with the use of machine learning techniques.

The program runs from July 13 to September 13, 2026, some flexibility will be considered depending on the project needs. Students will spend nine weeks at ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, PSI, the University of Bern (possibly FERMILAB), EPFL and the University of Geneva. Each student will be guided by a supervisor, responsabile for their training program. A final report and some presentations (in English) on the project will be required during the duration of the program.

Participants will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, average score in exams, graduation score if applicable, and suitability for the program, as indicated in a personal statement. Some merit-based scholarships are available.

Applications should be made at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/program/31730 and should include:
  1. Cover Letter where the student should provide reasons why they seek to be admitted to the program,
  2. Curriculum Vitae,
  3. Application form + Academic Transcripts as a single .pdf file: Download the Application form
  4. Previous Research Project (if available) in pdf format. If not in English, applicants should provide a summary (2-3 pages) in English explaining their main contributions.
Candidates should also arrange for two reference letters from professors or scientists at national and international laboratories. Letters must be submitted online by the reference writers by the deadline.

The deadline is March 20, 2026. The review will start soon after. Candidates will be informed if they are selected by the end of April.
