DEPARTMENT OF BIOSTATISTICS AND BIOINFORMATICS

 

Assistant/Associate Professors 

 

The Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (B&B) at Duke University is conducting a search for candidates for faculty positions at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level.  B&B is a quantitatively-oriented department with faculty specializing in areas relevant to medical research, including computational biology, genetics and genomics, clinical trials, observational analysis, and biomedical informatics.  B&B is an integral component of one of the nation’s foremost medical research enterprises.  With more than 50 faculty members collaborating closely with both clinical and basic science investigators, the department offers both PhD and Master’s degrees in Biostatistics and emphasizes excellence in both research and teaching.

 

The faculty biostatistician will work with the Duke Biostatistics Core, in alignment with appropriately matched investigative groups to collaborate on one or more of a number of initiatives, both federally and industry supported.  In addition to general statistical expertise, the ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and an interest in teaching.

 

The candidate will:

  • Continue to develop a research portfolio in the candidate’s area of expertise, as compatible with the participating collaborative group(s).

  • Take a leadership role within investigative groups with whom he or she collaborates.

    • Participate in strategy sessions for designing and implementing studies.

    • Oversee and guide biostatistical staff working in the collaborative group.

    • Uphold and promote responsible conduct of research.

  • Develop novel statistical approaches to the design or analysis of proposed studies.

  • Disseminate the information on these approaches through presentations at major statistical meetings and publications in major statistical and clinical journals.

  • Upon completion of experiments and analyses, actively participate and collaborate in preparation of scientific publications.

 

Requirements:

Mandatory:

  • A PhD degree in Biostatistics, Statistics or a related field

  • Experience as a collaborating statistician on a variety of study designs

  • Experience in conducting reproducible analysis using statistical software environments (e.g., R, Julia or SAS)

  • Highly self-motivated, enthusiastic about scientific discovery and able to collaborate closely and effectively with other members of a research team

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)

Desirable:

  • Professional knowledge of biology and biomedical research

  • Three years or more experience.

  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g., C/C++, Fortran, Perl, Python, Scala)

  • Managerial experience

  • Experience in randomized clinical trials
