Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory seeks highly qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Associate working on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Fermilab has a strong and diverse physics research program on CMS. Fermilab is the home of the LHC Physics Center (LPC) and plays a leading role in physics analysis on CMS in the areas of searches for physics beyond the standard model (supersymmetry, dark matter, extra dimensions, etc.), studies of the Higgs Boson, and measurements of standard model processes. The successful candidate will be highly motivated to conduct physics research and will be expected to lead in analysis of the full dataset of the 13 TeV proton-proton collisions acquired in run 2, and the 14 TeV collisions planned for run 3.

Fermilab has key roles within several areas of CMS which are unique opportunities for postdoctoral research, including the operation of the experiment, and the upgrade of the detector, trigger, and computing. This position is targeting future leaders in scientific computing. Fermilab is a leader in scientific computing for high energy physics, and has the largest CMS Tier-1 center. The scientific staff of the Fermilab Scientific Computing Division provide leadership in a large variety of scientific computing activities. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to conduct state-of-the-art computing research and development in several key areas involving industry-standard computing technologies and exascale supercomputing. This research and development will be targeting LHC Run 3 and the HL-LHC. The successful candidate is expected to be involved in the day-to-day operations of CMS computing to support analysis of the run 2 datasets as a basis for all R&D activities.


Term of Appointment

Positions are for an initial period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter.

Qualifications and Essential Job Functions

  • Ph.D. in particle physics or a related discipline by the time of the appointment.
  • Strong record of recent accomplishments in experimental physics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by presentations at conferences and a record of publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals.
