Harry S. Levitan Director of Education, Brandeis University (open-rank faculty position)

Brandeis University, a liberal arts research university, invites applications for the position of the Levitan Director of Education.  The director will lead the Education Program which prepares teachers and teacher-leaders for K-12 schools and provides an undergraduate major in Education Studies.  The director will serve on the faculty of Brandeis University at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor either inside or outside the tenure system.  For this position, we seek an individual who can straddle the worlds of academia and public education and who shares our commitment to promoting social justice through education.

The Education Program is a small, lively interdisciplinary unit which currently offers an undergraduate minor in teacher preparation, an MAT program that prepares teachers for both public and Jewish day schools, an undergraduate major in Education Studies that draws on courses from many departments and a master's program in teacher leadership.  The director will be expected to provide creative and strategic intellectual leadership for these initiatives, collaborate with and support the diverse faculty who work within, including the director of teacher education, represent the Education Program inside and outside the university and teach courses central to the mission of vitalizing American public education.

We seek a dynamic leader who welcomes the opportunity to lead and develop this expanding Program.  Applicants should have a doctorate in Education or a related field and a record of scholarly activity in such areas as equity and school reform, educational policy, teaching and learning, education and schooling, learning and learners in context.  Applicants should also have a proven record of effective administrative leadership and higher education teaching experience.  The position requires leadership of faculty and students as well as effective management, communications and team-building skills.  Experience with program design and grant-seeking would be welcome.
