Position Description:    

The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy (P&A) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa invite applications for up to four tenure-track faculty positions, depending on the availability of funding. One or two of the positions will be at the IfA and one or two will be in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Candidates will be evaluated by a joint committee of the two units. The committee is seeking candidates that will strengthen the linkage between the IfA and the Physics and Astronomy programs. For at least two of the positions, preference will be given to applicants whose research interests are in the field of cosmology. Applications are encouraged equally from individuals with observational, experimental, and theoretical backgrounds. Appointments will be considered at both the Assistant and Associate level.

Applicants should have an outstanding research record, an ability to lead a research program involving students and postdocs, and an ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Duties include undertaking a program of independent research, the teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses, and contributions to the academic and scientific life of the IfA and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The anticipated start date is Fall 2019. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or closely related areas as well as successful research experience as demonstrated by accomplishments, publications and letters of recommendation. Applicants at the Assistant level must have a demonstrated ability to teach/pedagogic skills and demonstrated scholarly achievement. Applicants at the Associate level must have demonstrated proficiency in teaching and a minimum of four years of full-time college/university teaching at the rank of assistant professor (or equivalent), with evidence of increasing professional maturity.

Desirable qualifications include at least two years of post-doctoral research.

The IfA has strong research groups in nearly all areas of astrophysics and has guaranteed access to the entire suite of observational facilities on the summits of Maunakea and Haleakala. The IfA is also the lead institution operating the Pan-STARRS wide-field optical telescopes. More information about the IfA is available at http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has a strong experimental program in astrophysics (cosmic rays, neutrinos, dark matter) and high-energy physics (b meson physics, instrumentation and neutrinos) and a vigorous theory program in high-energy physics.
